Join us for this unique retreat, where you will get a gentle introduction to Buddhist teachings in the very region of the Buddhism’s origin. We combine the teachings from a Buddhist practitioner and long-term student of Buddhism, with meditation and yoga, while giving you the chance to immerse in the jungle life of the Tharu people.

 

As an added bonus, we will introduce you to our herd of elephants and give you an unforgettable ethical elephant encounter. These gentle giants have great symbolic meaning in Buddhism, and we hope that meeting these beautiful characters will give you a deeper understanding of the profound teachings of Buddhism.

Tiger Tops Jungle Buddhist Retreat Itinerary

 

Wednesday 21st February 

  • Morning flight Kathmandu – Bharatpur

 

  • Arrive at Tiger Tops Tharu Lodge for welcome drinks and introduction the lodge and the programme of events for the retreat. Guests will be invited to check-in and settle into their rooms. Once settled, guests will join on the lawn for a traditional Nepali lunch of dal bhat, cooked lovingly by our team of chefs, using ingredients from our expansive organic garden.

 

  • Afternoon: In the afternoon we will visit the Elephant Camp, meet our mahouts and our elephants, as well as a brief introduction to their daily routine and our unique, ethical elephant programme. Following the Elephant Camp tour, we will join together for an introduction to Buddhism session.

 

  • Dinner will be served in the Tharu Lodge dining hall. After dinner guests are invited to join around the campfire for storytelling and discussion or return to their rooms to rest.

 

Thursday 22nd February 

 

 

  • 6:30 Early morning wake up with tea served in your room. Take a moment to welcome in the day and start to prepare for the mindful and informative day ahead.

 

  • 7:00-8:00 Guests will have the option of joining our Buddhism teacher, Uldis for a guided meditation or join our yoga teacher Erin for a gentle morning yoga session.

 

  • 8.00-9.00 After the early morning session is complete guests will join as a group for a hearty vegetarian breakfast.

 

  • 9.30-12:00 – Guests can choose one of the following activities; Elephant Walk, Boat Safari*, Birdwatching, Elephant Sandwich Making, or School Visit. Guests will be each be accompanied by a member of our expert team of naturalists to learn about the flora and fauna of Chitwan National Park, its buffer zone and the surrounding community areas. Your Guest Relations Officer will coordinate with you as to which activities you would like to do.

 

  • 12:00-13:30 Lunch on the lawn.

 

  • 13:30-15:00 In this session the group will join together with Uldis to observe Buddhist teachings, lessons and mantras. This is a unique opportunity to learn about Buddhism from a long-term student of the practice, within the deeply relaxing and spiritual environment of the lodge grounds.

 

  • 16:00-17:00 Guests will have the option of joining our Buddhism teacher Uldis for a guided meditation or join yoga teacher Erin for a yoga session that caters to the specific needs of the group and individuals.

 

  • 18.30-19:30  During this evening session the group will have the opportunity for an open discussion and Q&A session on Buddhism around the fireplace in the Dining Hall of Tiger Tops Tharu Lodge; to share stories, observations and personal journeys.

 

  • 19:30-22:00 Dinner and campfire chat.

 

Friday 23rd February

 

 

Full Day trip to Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha. This day trip will incorporate meditation and teachings throughout the day while visiting the Lumbini UNESCO World Heritage Sites and temple complexes. We will leave Tiger Tops Tharu Lodge in the early morning and return in the early evening. We will be transported by a private vehicle to the front gates of the Lumbini temple complex. Today will involve more walking than when we are at the lodge; we suggest you bring a comfortable pair of shoes with you.

 

 

We will, of course, visit the Maya Devi Temple the exact site of Lord Buddha’s birth and take a moment or two to appreciate the significance of this deeply spiritual location.
The Lumbini UNESCO World Heritage Site includes temples donated by China, Myanmar, Thailand, Korea, Japan and France to name but a few; all of which are built in the traditional style of the nation who sponsored them. This is a phenomenal opportunity to understand how the practice of Buddhism changes around the world. Be sure to bring your camera, the architectural designs are breathtaking.

Saturday 24th February

 

 

  • 6:30 Early morning wake up with tea served in your room. Take a moment to welcome in the day reflect on your journey on the retreat so far.

 

  • 7:00-8:00 Guests will have the option of joining our Uldis for a guided meditation or join Erin for a gentle morning yoga session. Perhaps you would like to follow the same day plan as you did on Thursday or perhaps you would like to change your schedule depending on how you feel in the moment. We have intentionally structured the retreat to offer our guest the opportunity to create a programme of events that suits them.

 

  • 8.00-9.00 After the early morning session is complete guests will join as a group for a hearty vegetarian breakfast.

 

  • 9.30-12:00 – Guests can choose one of the following activities; Elephant Walk, Boat Safari*, Birdwatching, Elephant Sandwich Making, School Visit. This is a wonderful opportunity explore the jungle and observe how our elephants interact with their environment if you have not done so already. Tiger Tops is proud to have some of the best bird conservationists on the subcontinent, don’t miss this chance to learn from the best!

 

  • 12:00-13:30 Lunch on the lawn.

 

  • 13:30-15:00 In this session the group will join together with Uldis to expand our knowledge of Buddhist teachings, lessons and mantras. In this final teaching session, guests will have the opportunity to ask questions and further expand their realm of consciousness.

 

  • 16:00-17:00  Guests will have the option of joining our Buddhism teacher Uldis guided meditation or join Erin for a yoga session that caters to the specific needs of the group and individuals.

 

  • 18.30-19:30  During this final evening session the group will have the opportunity for an open discussion and Q&A session on Buddhism around the fireplace in the Dining Hall of Tiger Tops Tharu Lodge; to share stories, observations and personal journeys.

 

  • 19:30-22:00 Dinner and campfire chat.

 

Sunday 25th February 

 

 

  • 6:30 Early morning wake up with tea served in your room. Take a moment to welcome in the day reflect on your journey back into the world and how you will implement your learnings into your daily life.

 

  • 7:00-8:00 Guests will have the option of joining Uldis for a final guided meditation or join Erin for a final morning yoga session.

 

  • 8:00-9:00 Breakfast and consolidatory chat about the retreat, what was learned and how you will incorporate what you have learned and observed into your daily mindful and spiritual practices.

 

  • 11:00 Departure to Bharatpur Airport

 

 

*Boat Safaris will run according to guest numbers and interest.

 

 

The cost for the Buddhist Jungle Retreat is  $675.00 USD per person.

 

This includes:

  • 4 nights, 5 days Tiger Tops Tharu Lodge accommodation on twin sharing basis

  • Three meals per day plus tea & coffee

Your Buddhism Teacher: Uldis Balodis

Uldis Balodis has been a practicing Buddhist for more than 40 years, and was a bhikshu (a Buddhist monk) for 4 years. Over the course of time he has received teachings and initiations from many great Lamas.

Born in Australia in 1949 by Latvian immigrant parents, Uldis became interested in Buddhism in his early 20’s. He met Lama Zopa Rinpoche and Lama Yeshe in 1974. Having done a number of courses with the respected Lamas in Australia he founded Tara House in Melbourne so that others might have the opportunity to study Dharma and practice together. He spent a year in Dharamsala in 1978.

Uldis lived in Nepal for over 25 years, where he established a home for his family. During that time he had many opportunities to receive teachings from Lama Zopa Rinpoche at Kopan monastery. He founded the Himalayan Buddhist Meditation Centre in Kathmandu. From 2000 he has spent a large part of his time in Latvia teaching Dharma and establishing Ganden Centre in Riga and Den Nyi Ling Retreat Centre in the countryside in Latvia.

Your Yoga Teacher: Erin 

Erin has been practicing yoga for 20 years, initially in California and then while living and working all over the world- from China, the UK, Morocco, Nepal, and islands of Thailand. She was certified by Yoga Alliance in Hatha yoga at Ashiyana Yoga School in Goa, India. Since then she’s been teaching all levels, ages, and nationalities, primarily in Kathmandu, Nepal, and Thailand.

Erin works with her individual students to find out what they need, and aims to allow the body to experience the benefits yoga brings. She has an approachable manner and teaches in a lighthearted style.  She focuses on alignment, creating space, strength, and also gentleness – emphasizing that balance. She works with many clients suffering from back or neck pain, sciatica problems, stressful minds, or just a general desire to get more flexibility and balance in their bodies and in their lives.
